The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe:  Simplicity 8873

I really enjoy wearing dresses with a 50’s silhouette because they make me feel so pretty and feminine.  I also like that generally, the lines are very simple, but they do so much for my particular shape.  They hide a MULTITUDE of sins y’all.

As it started to get hotter in SoCal, I switched my MeMade mission over to lighter fabrics and came across this super light weight cotton that I’d purchased probably about a year ago. I also have had this Gertie x Simplicity pattern for almost as long, but I guess I just never thought to put them together.  Plaids can be pretty difficult to work with because you have to match them up.  But since this was such a small plaid, it ended up not being as bad as I thought.

Pattern: Simplicity Sewing Pattern S8873 Misses' Dress by Patterns by Gertie

Fabric: Quilter's Showcase Cotton Fabric Tibetan Red Check Plaid from Joann’s

Style: Sundress

Vintage/Contemporary:  Contemporary Repro of Vintage Design

Pattern Edits:

1. I opted to do a lining for the bodice instead of facing around the neckline and arms because the fabric was so light and thin, I didn’t want to potentially be showing all my goodies.

Lessons Learned:

1. I was a little nervous about lining the pockets up with the top of the skirt because of all the pleating.  I thought maybe it may look bunchy or weird.  But I had to trust that the pattern wouldn’t steer me wrong.  And if it did, I could always take the stitching out and move the pockets down. So, like always, Simplicity had my back. Thanks y’all!

I think this is one of the easier patterns I’ve completed.  I spent a few hours over the course of two days completing it. It probably took me longer to cut it than it did to construct it if I’m being honest. So I would recommend this to all levels of sewists who understand how to read sewing patterns.
