Costume Remix #18: Eve’s Bayou (1997)
As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work. I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films. So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.
Eve’s Bayou is a lovely mash up of new actors and seasoned thespians. Meagan Good and Jurnee and Jake Smollett hold their own against heavy hitters like Diahann Carroll, Lynn Whitfield and Debbi Morgan. I take issue with a lot of the plot points like making a child out to be a liar about sexual abuse. But that aside, I love the overall feel of the film. And the costumes! Miss Karyn Wagner, you are a delight.
For this Remix, I wanted to recreate a halter dress that Debbi Morgan’s character Mozelle wears while on a picnic with her sister Roz.
Pattern: Butterick 6049 Misses’ Dress
Fabric: Black & White Mudcloth Inspired Cotton Fabric and Black & White Striped Cotton Apparel Fabric from Hobby Lobby
Style: Halter Dress
Vintage/Contemporary: Vintage
Reproduction/Original: Reproduction
This is my second time making this dress. The first one I made with some contrasting Ankara print fabrics and it it turned out super cute. I wore it into the ground. And I’m so excited that I now have a new version of it to wear on every possible occasion.
