Costume Redux #2: House Party 2

As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work.  I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films.  So I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases revamp, or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.

During my fall vacation this past November, I took LeeLoo’s fight costume from The Fifth Element (designed by Jean Paul Gaultier) and designed a tote bag based on it.

This time around, I’m recreating Sidney’s mudcloth print hat from House Party 2 (designed by Ruth E. Carter).  I just loved her costume journey in this movie.  I know what it’s like to get to college and not know who the hell you are.  You start to take on the personas of those around you.

Anyway, the hat was actually my second choice.  I originally wanted to do Bilal’s necklace but couldn’t find beads that big ANYWHERE. Ms. Carter, if you ever read this, please tell me where you got those beads. I need that necklace in my life.

I haven’t made any edits yet, but I’m considering running a thin bit of elastic through the band because I’ve got a teensy head. Also, I LOVE this pattern and this hat and plan to make it in every color.  It doesn’t make my head look as small as it is and doesn’t mess up my hair.

I’m really proud of nailing this project.  I wonder if this hat was purchased, pulled or built.  I also wonder what the inspiration was behind it.  In any event, I can’t wait to rock my “Sidney” look really soon.
