The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe:  McCalls 7789 & Vogue 1486

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before, but the pandemic made me realize that I needed a lot more loungewear in my wardrobe.  I bought a bunch of vintage caftans on eBay and then ran through some super soft onesies from SavageX.  Finally I decided to make myself some cute, comfy fits.

Pattern: Misses' Dresses and Jumpsuits and Misses' Crop Top and Flared Yoke Skirt

Fabric: Ponte Knit from Rye Canyon Supply Co.

Style: Wide Leg Pants & Crop Top

Vintage/Contemporary:  Contemporary

Pattern Edits:

1. I didn’t make any edits on the pants with the exception of making them pants. You see the pattern calls for them to be attached to a bra, making it a jumpsuit.  But I didn’t want a jumpsuit.  So I didn’t add the bra portion.  I was a little concerned about the ponte not being stable enough (even with interfacing) to hold form.  But it turned out just fine.

2. I added a drawstring to the crop top.  It fit fine, but I knew that the second I raised my arms, I’d be sharing my world with everyone.  SO the drawstring just keeps everything nice and PG.

3. I also opted for a shorter zipper for the pants and the top.  I didn’t need to zip all the way down the back of the shirt OR down to my booty hole.  So I just made an executive decision.

Lessons Learned:

1. I didn’t alter the pants for my long torso or pooch this time.  I just gave myself some wiggle room.  So instead of cutting a bunch of extra fabric and sewing it all up and then checking to see if it fits.  I only cut a bit of extra fabric (I’m getting better at not being wasteful).  Then I did fittings after every step.  Sew a leg, try it on…sew the other leg…try it on…pin the waistband, try it on.  This took more time than I’m used to putting into a project. But it was well worth it.

The crop top was a really straight forward pattern to follow.  I think any novice would be able to handle it.  Pants can be a little tricky once they go beyond, say, a basic legging. I would say proceed with caution…especially around those pockets.
