The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe: McCall’s 7513
At one time I kinda detested jackets because I felt like they made me look weird. The biggest thing on my already big body, is my bust. It’s been this way for years. And when I shop I often buy for my bust and then tailor it down. But jackets are crazy hard to tailor. So I stayed away from them for a LONG time.
In the past few years though, I’ve found some really cute ones in thrift and vintage stores. And I often buy a men’s over-sized blazer and don’t alter it at all. I just roll up the sleeves and stomp through these streets looking cute. I’d never thought of making one until recently, when I came across a few cute patterns that looked like my speed.
This jacket, reads kinda old on the patter, but I feel like I brought something cute to it. I def wanted to do it in a brocade. And when one of the talented costumers at school brought in a bevy of fabrics she needed to get rid of, I found the perfect set of threads.
Pattern: Misses' Notch-Collar, Peplum Jackets
Fabric: Heavy Curtain Fabric…Knit Brocade…I don’t know
Style: Peplum Jacket
Vintage/Contemporary: Contemporary
Pattern Edits:
1. I combined Styles B and D.
2. I used the wrong side of the fabric for contrast in the peplum, sleeves and collar.
3. I only lined the bodice, not the sleeves.
Lessons Learned:
1. Use a stabilizer when making buttonholes in stretchy fabric.
2. Fit the garment on the dress form often…especially if it’s a tailored garment like a jacket.
I’d put this pattern at intermediate. The collar was fairly tricky and if you don’t have a serger or experience with linings, don’t bother.
