The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe: Butterick 6349

My mother-in-law, Sarita, who’s a quilter, runs a sick embroidery biz, and is a fellow sewist and crafter, is always sending me all types of goodies that she picks up at estate sales and the like. She knows how much I love vintage shit, in particular, vintage clothing.  So she’ll grab a shit tone of patterns for like 50 cents a pop and send ‘em in a box to me.  One of these care packages included this vintage pattern for a utility vest.  I looked at it and immediately started judging.  Like, what in the entire fuck am I gonna do with a pattern for a utility vest?  But something told me to just file it with the rest of my patterns and come back to it later. Then one day while going through my patterns I saw it again and instantly had an epiphany.  I saw this vest in an Ankara print and paired with wide leg jeans and I got my entire life.

I made it to wear for our recent trip to NYC. I wore it as we ran all over the city, visiting The Met, eating our way through downtown, and drinks in Hell’s Kitchen.  And of course I paired it with the wide leg jeans I made with Simplicity 8177.

Pattern Edits:

1. This may have been the first time I’ve ever NOT made any pattern edits.  The pattern was basically perfect.  And super easy.  I made this vest in less than a day.  And I can wear it so many ways.  Plus.  It is in fact a utility vest because I have pockets that are functional AF.

Lessons Learned:

1. I learned not to judge a pattern by it’s cover.  I think because the vests illustrated on the cover of the pattern, are so God awful that I didn’t think it was worth my time. I’m so glad that I didn’t throw it away because it resulted in one of my current fave garments.
