Costume Remix #23: A Simple Favor (2018)

I think one of the hardest genres of film has to be comedy.  Right after that I would list contemporary films.  A Simple Favor fits into both of those categories.  The choices made by Renee Ehrlich Kalfus, the film’s designer, might feel wacky.  But they’re perfect if you ask me.

While I loved the whimsical, almost immature costumes worn by Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), my favorite pieces were Emily’s (Blake Lively’s) suits.

I must admit that I get a lady boner for a woman in a pant suit (Hilary Clinton…here’s lookin’ at you kid). So I wanted to create something badass and powerful, but also a little zany.  I settled on using a Vogue x Guy Laroche designer pattern to accomplish this.

Pattern: Vogue V1687 Misses Jacket and Pants

Fabric: Yellow and Green Brocade from an LACC donation

Style: Asymmetrical jacket with pockets and pleated ankle pants

Vintage/Contemporary: Contemporary

I considered using contrasting fabrics as suggested by the pattern, mostly because I wanted to make sure that the asymmetry was translating as intentional and not a mistake.  But then I decided that I didn’t care and moved on.  I think the end result serves Gordon Gartrell chic.
