Costume Remix #15: I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1988)

As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work.  I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films.  So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.

I’m generally not one for slapstick humor, and I also don’t like satire or parody.  But I’m Gonna Git You Sucka  is the exception.  I can, and have, watch this movie over and over again.  It’s so wonderfully ridiculous.  And it shows us so many actors in the infancy of their careers.  I love how Ruth Carter instagram.com/therealruthecarter/?hl=enleans into the ludicrousness of the storyline and goes off on the absurdity.

There are SO many costumes that I’d love to remix from this film.  But I don’t have to choose just one, I can do several.  So for this edition of the I’m Gonna Git You Sucka remix, I’m tackling the characters of Kung Fu Jo and Fly Guy.  (*Please note that Fly Guy may be making an appearance in a future remix.)

I found a vintage pattern for a traditional Chinese jacket and was going to keep this simple.  You know, make it in yellow or pink like Fly Guy’s infamous pimp suits. However, I felt the jacket would be nice with some embroidery on the back. So I decided to do a yin/yang symbol with goldfish (a homage to Fly Guy’s jail release shoes) inside.

Pattern: Butterick 4499

Fabric: Black Stretch Twill from Hobby Lobby

Style: Traditional Chinese Jacket

Vintage/Contemporary: Vintage

Oh I’m fixin’ to dress this up, dress it down, and wear it all the damn time.  I’m gonna be Pimp of the Year. Y’all can’t tell me nothing.
