Costume Remix #29: The Craft (1996)

As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work.  I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films.  So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.

The Craft is one of those movies that holds a weird and special place in the hearts of any girl who was a teen in the 90’s.  Because I’m black, my fave witch was and always will be Rachel True’s character, Rochelle.  I coveted her hair.  I coveted her skin.  And most of all, I coveted her clothes.  Thank you Deborah Everton!

For this remix, I initially was going to go for a Wednesday Addams vibe, sort of how Nancy gets all sexy babydoll after she gets her witch powers. However, that didn’t really work out for me like I thought it would and I had to shift gears. So instead I decided to combine the blue palate of the school’s uniforms with the plaid/grunge look of the 90s.

I think the scene where the girls go into the woods to fully form their coven, shows the earthy nature that wicca is based on and has a softer more grounded palette. So ultimately I used this scene as my inspiration.

Pattern: Simplicity 7938

Fabric: Both plaids were purchased as scraps a million years ago. So I haven’t a clue where I got them.  This was a great project to help me get rid of miscellaneous fabric.

Style: Jumper

Vintage/Contemporary:  Vintage

I only made a few small changes to this super simple pattern. Using bias tape to finish off the hem and in the stead of facing for arm and neck holes, was actually one of the best ideas I’ve had lately.

Also, I threw in a doodle just for shits and giggles.
