Costume Remix #9: The Wiz (1978)
As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work. I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films. So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.
The Wiz is one of my all-time favorite movies and it’s a movie that my husband and I bonded over when we first met. We’ve already paid tribute to it via some costumes we did several years ago.
But I wanted to do a more subtle homage to it through this Costume Remix series.
I’m sure I’ll remix other costume pieces from this film in the future. But I decided to go with a less obvious choice with The Wizard’s (Richard Pryor) robe.
Pattern: Simplicity 8613 Men's Knit Top by Mimi G Style
Fabric: Sweatshirt Knight from Rye Canyon Supply and Aztec Patterned Acrylic from Joann’s
Style: Reglan Shirt
Vintage/Contemporary: Contemporary
I think I fell in love with the print of the robe. It’s a pretty boring piece. But I felt like the print could make literally any other garment look great. And since Aaron has been bugging me for a contrast panel Reglan and loves the movie too, this seemed like a pretty natural choice.
