Costume Remix #13: Toys (1992)

As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work.  I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films.  So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.

Robin Williams was an American treasure and even though this film was panned, it’s one of my favorites of his.  There are so many amazing costumes from this film, like literally everything that Joan Cusack wears. (Thank you Albert Wolsky for your dedication to all things camp.) But I loved Leland’s bright camo fatigues.  I found a camo that was unconventional but not too crazy and decided to give a subdued spin on his outfit.

I ran into some issues early on.  I needed a large space to cut my pattern pieces and had to resort to old methods of laying everything out on the floor.

And because a lot of the pieces weren’t being cut double, I had to be really careful about what direction I laid them down (i.e. face up or face down).  Well, luck has it that I laid one piece down the wrong way and ended up with a whole panel that’s cut inside out. I contemplated ordering more fabric.  But after  pinning the piece in as it was, I decided I kind of liked the mistake.  What do you think?
