The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe: Simplicity 8830
I love that despite the pandemic, I’ve been able to visit some of my favorite fabric haunts because the proprietors have gone above and beyond to create a safe environment for us crafters to get our hoard on. One such place is Rye Canyon Supply Co. I love searching through all the beautiful finds that they’ve saved from going to landfills and at the same time saved landfills from the unnecessary non-degradable waste.
Anyway, I’ve been seeing different versions of this really cute cartoon jungle cat print everywhere. But when I see it, it’s always way more expensive than I want to pay. So when I saw it at RCS on the low-low, I snagged it quickly and had the perfect pattern just for it.
Pattern: Simplicity Sewing Pattern S8830 Mimi G Misses'/Miss Petite Shirtdress
Fabric: Cartoon Jungle Cat Print from Rye Canyon Supply Co.
Style: Button Down, Long-Line Shirt
Vintage/Contemporary: Contemporary
Pattern Edits:
1. I followed this pattern very closely and didn’t change anything except for the epaulets. I made them and then forgot to set them in the seem between the sleeve and bodice. So I ended up sewing them on top of the fabric instead of setting them in. The difference isn’t noticeable, and epaulets are pretty useless except for making a garment look pretty snazzy. So overlooking this step wasn’t a big deal.
Lessons Learned:
1. I’m going to continue to take my time and follow directions until my instincts tell me to do otherwise. I really love how I’ve been getting more precise with my sewing skills by just taking my time.
I think this pattern was really easy to follow. But if you have any issues with (or are a novice with) more tailored garments like a button up shirt that would require you to install a collar or do a bunch of buttons (there’s 15-16 buttons in this pattern) then maybe you want to practice on a simper garment first.
