Denim Redeux/The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe:  Simplicity 8845

So check it, I’d bought a jean jacket from Forever 21’s plus section at least 6 years ago. I wore it out. I mean WORE.IT.OUT.  When I initially bought it, it already had a lot of distressing.  But that simple distressing, had turned to big ass holes in the yoke panels of it.

I had to figure out what I was going to do.  Do I just purchase a jacket? Do I buy some denim and make one? What?!

Then it came to me.  I remembered seeing an article in Threads Magazine several years ago that spoke about using old jeans to create a jean jacket.  I literally had this revelation as my husband was carrying several pairs of his jeans to the garbage.  I tackled him in the kitchen, ripped the jeans from his hands, yelled, “These are mine!” and ran to my sewing room.

I found the article again and read it thoroughly.

Then I pulled out Mimi and Norris’ Simplicity pattern and got to work.

1. The only super minor change that I made was that I didn’t do top stitching EVERYWHERE.  I did it in the places where it felt like it made sense and worked for the aesthetic.

Lessons Learned:

1. I hate welt pockets…This jacket has welt pockets…I hate the pockets on this jacket. That said, I’m proud of myself for at least attempting to put them in. I used to run for the hills when I saw a welt pocket in a pattern. But each time I’ve tried it, I’ve gotten better. So I guess there’s something to that whole, practice makes perfect idea.

All newbies should approach this pattern with caution.  I don’t recommend it at all.  But I do recommend repurposing old clothes that you’re not going to donate. Let’s not add to the landfills if we can help it. #ReduceReuseRecycle
