The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe:  McCall’s 7841

Hubby and I have a bit of an obsession with sweatshirts.  Like even though we live in SoCal, we both have a pretty extensive collection.  And they’re not necessarily designer or anything.  There’s just something cool about something so comfortable also looking so fly.

I had bought a grey sweatshirt from CVS (do NOT judge me) a few years ago because I was going to cut it up and break it down to wear it looking kinda shredded.  But for some odd reason, I never got around to altering it.  So hubby took it.  He wore it at least once a week.  And as a result, it eventually got some stains on it that I couldn’t get out.  (I blame curry…it’s always curry.) Anyway, he wanted another plain crewneck sweatshirt but couldn’t find anything that really worked.  So when I picked up this pattern, I knew he’d be pleased.  He came with me to the fabric store and picked out some sweatshirt fleece that was only $5/yard.  I’m convinced that he’s actually listening when I’m rambling on about the cost of supplies. Anywho, this is what I put together for him.

Pattern: Misses’ and Men’s Tops (Out of Print)

Fabric: Heather Grey Sweatshirt Fleece from Michael Levine

Style: Crewneck Sweatshirt

Vintage/Contemporary:  Contemporary

Pattern Edits:

1. I didn’t change anything.  But I wish I did.  I think I should have changed the stitch to maybe a zigzag stretch stitch because hubby has popped these seams just putting it on like 4 times.  And it’s not like it’s too small.  So I’m thinking something about the stitch is screwy.

2. While I didn’t change the pattern, I DID have to alter the sweatshirt for fit A LOT.

Lessons Learned:

1. Simple garments like t-shirts and sweatshirts, apparently need the most altering.  I’ve made them for myself and they’ve been awful in terms of getting the fit right.  I had to re-jigger the neck hole for hubby twice.

This is probably great for a novice in terms of the initial construction.  But good luck with those alterations fam.
