The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe:  McCall’s 7932

I first fell in love with the paper bag look when I saw some of the garments that Project Runway alum, Sonja Williams, made.  Her shit is bomb y’all.  When my cash flow is a little more steady, I promise to buy one of her pieces.  But until then I was trying to quench my thirst with cheaper versions.  It was an epic fail.  Then I came across this pattern. It’s not exactly what I was looking for. But I knew I could alter it to suit my needs.  Next, I was fortunate to be gifted some upholstery fabric that I knew would be perfect for this skirt.  I didn’t have enough of ether the aqua or the orange to make the skirt in one color.  So I decided to alternate the panel colors.

Pattern: Misses' Skirts

Fabric: Heavyweight Textured Upholstery Fabric

Style: Paper bag Skirt

Vintage/Contemporary:  Contemporary

Pattern Edits:

1. I added a few inches to the top of the skirt to make it a little more dramatic.

2. I went full throttle with the alternating colors down to the inside of the pockets.

Lessons Learned:

1. Heavy upholstery fabric is great because it’s sturdy.

2. Heavy upholstery fabric sucks because it’s sturdy.  It took me a cool hour to get the tie through the casing.  It was ridiculous.

This was a pretty easy pattern.  I think I completed it in one day. I got the desired structural effect I wanted with the fabric I used.  Although I’ll probs think twice about using something so heavy again unless I’m making a coat.
