The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe: McCall’s (M599)

It’s springtime, so that means it’s wedding season. I’ve got three weddings this year and when I can’t find something cute and vintage to wear, I make something. This time I went with a vintage repro pattern from McCall’s Archive Collection.
Pattern: Misses' Lined Fit-and Flare Dresses with Petticoat (Dress B)
Fabric: 4 yards of Brother Sister Design Studio Floral Print B66-FB-P05S from Hobby Lobby
Style: Rockabilly
Vintage/Contemporary: Vintage
Original/Reproduction: Reproduction
Pattern Edits:
I didn’t add the petticoat because I ran out of fabric. In fact, I had to alter the hem of the skirt because of my lack of fabric. But I think because I did the latter, the former didn’t matter.
Lessons Learned:
I happened to be simultaneously working through Course #2 of Mimi G’s Sew It Academy while I was making this dress. One of the mini lessons was about sewing curves and cutting slits and/or notches in the seam before turning the fabric. I’d seen instructions to do so in some of the patterns that I’ve used. But it’s never been consistent, and I was never sure when to use slits and when to use notches. Having Mimi clear that up for me helped when I was sewing the bodice to the bodice lining and had to turn the fabric. Having notches and slits in the seam made turning the fabric SO much easier.
Dress B only had three pattern pieces, bodice front, bodice back and skirt back/front. I had to use darts, incorporate a lining, and add a side zipper. This may have been the easiest pattern I’ve ever worked on. It took me two days. But that’s only because I was working on another sewing project and writing up posts at the same time. I would recommend this pattern to any newbie who’s dabbled in garment making.
