Costume Remix #21: The Karate Kid Part II (1986)

As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work.  I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films.  So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.

The Karate Kid franchise is ripe with amazing costumes to try to replicate or remix. But I’ve always been drawn to the gis worn by the martial artists. The gi worn Chozen Toguchi and designed by Mary Malin is my all-time favorite. You can tell that he came to show TF out. Is that quilting on your gi? You bet your sweet ass it is!

So I took a stab at making something that gave a nod with a double breasted vest and culottes in a bamboo linen.

Pattern: (Top) Vogue 1707 Misses' Vest, Shorts & Pants (Bottom) Vogue 1772 Misses' Pants

Fabric: Cotton/Linen Blend with a bamboo print from Rye Canyon Supply Co.

Style: vest and culottes

Vintage/Contemporary: contemporary

I ran into an issue when making the vest because I didn’t realize I needed enough fabric for a lining.  No worries, I found a nice navy fabric just hanging out in my stash that was perfect.
