Costume Remix #20: Gladiator (2000)

As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work.  I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films.  So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.

Gladiator is one of those movies that whenever it’s available to watch, I watch it.  It holds a special place in my heart because one crazy summer in college when I was subletting with a motley crew of fuckery, one of my roommates (and still good friend) Marlon bought a copy of the movie.  It was on VHS, I think, and we watched that movie several times a week.  I would force my way into his room because he was the only one with air conditioning.  Anyway,  even then, before I knew that costume design would be the gold at the end of my rainbow, I was focused on what everyone was wearing.

My favorite costumes were not the ornate draped gowns that the queen wore, but instead were the simple chitons worn by the slaves.  Janty Yates’ work is always rooted in research and authenticity. An even if it’s gritty it’s beautiful.

Pattern: Simplicity Pattern 8550 Misses' and Women's Dress, Tunic and Top

Fabric: Cotton/Linen Blend with a denim print from Rye Canyon Supply Co.

Style: Off the shoulder shirt dress

Vintage/Contemporary: contemporary

This is kind of perfect for LA weather because the off the shoulder gives me air but I can also throw it on with leggings and a jacket and be warm.

PS-Stay tuned for a possible addition to this dress.  I want to make a gladiator belt but I need to freshen up on my leather working skills.
