Costume Remix #10: Boomerang (1992)

BOOMERANG.png

As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work.  I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films.  So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.

Boomerang is one of my favorite movies of all time.  It’s pretty ridiculous.  But it touches on what it was like to date in the 90s and even early 2000s as a young, hot, black person.  There are so many beautiful costumes by Francine Jamison-Tanchuck in this movie.  But I was particularly drawn to everything that Halle berry’s character, Angela, wore.  In particular, I loved the outfit she wore when she realized that Marcus was cheating on her with Jacqueline.

Angela is sporting a black belted skater dress with a sheer bell sleeved crop top.

There is something so special about this era in black movies and black fashion.  I would have LOVED to be in my 20s during this time.  Y’all couldn’t’ve told me a damn thing. But I digress.

I made both pieces in about two days, one day to cut and pin, the next day to serge and sew. I didn’t plan to plow through this project quite so fast. But I ended up having some work drop into my lap, so that worked out for me.

I really love the fit of a skater dress. I think it compliments all figures. I’m tempted to make one in several colors and maybe try using neoprene, which I’ve been dying to work with.
