Costume Remix #12: Moulin Rouge (2001)

As a baby costume designer, I’m so eager to learn and enhance my craft and I spend a lot of time studying other artists’ work.  I am always inspired by the costume pieces from some of my favorite films.  So, I decided to start trying to recreate, and in some cases, revamp or put my own spin on some famous and not so famous pieces from these films.

Moulin Rouge is chock full of so many gorgeous costumes.  I’m in love with literally everything that Nicole Kidman’s Satine wears.  Her headpieces for the show within the show are particularly beautiful.  But there was something about Zidler’s character that really drew me in.  As the MC, he was basically the ringmaster for the cirque that was the Moulin Rouge.  And who doesn’t love a sassy ringmaster. That said, I wanted to recreate his read jacket. By the by, Catherine Martin, the amazing entity that design this film, is also an incomparable production designer…IJS.

Instead of going straight red, I decided to use a red print and have contrasting black cuffs and collar.

Lookit, I’m no Halle Berry.  I know what my body is, and I am okay with it.  That said, with my sewing and design abilities, I make sure to use my smoke and mirrors skills to present the image that I want.  So I really love anything with a cinched waist and A-line or circle skirt.  This silhouette makes me look snatched AF.

This pattern was super intricate.  And had way more pattern pieces than I’d anticipated. Though as much of a challenge as it was, it was also a real pleasure to put together.
