I Got to be a Mermaid for a Day=Best Day Ever

I’ve been semi obsessed with mermaids ever since Madonna’s Cherish video. What? You thought I was going to say The Little Mermaid? Wrongo! Nope, I was more of a Madonster than a Disney princess fan.  Anyway, I think it’s the mythology surrounding them and the combination of beauty, magic and a deadly siren song that I’ve always found intriguing.

So when my hubby told me about the Mermaid Museum (he was researching a Sleep No More-esque experience in Los Angeles and found this instead) I was more than down to go.

The Mermaid Museum is a pop up that’s part art experience, part promotion.  Freeform has a new show called Siren that tells the story of a coastal town named Bristol Cove.  There is a legend that the waters Bristol Cove sits on was once home to mermaids. One day a mysterious girl appears in the town and start wreaking havoc.  Two marine biologists work together to find out who drove this woman out of the sea and if there are more like her out there.

Sounds so good, right?

The Goya Studios pop-up was set up to let visitors feel like mermaids. You are given a ticket when before entering, more on this oh so important ticket later. The first room you enter is a shop, the kind you might find in an early 20th century fisherman’s town. In the shop is a hunky guy (who looks like half Brawny man, half Gordon’s fisherman) sketching a mermaid.

You exit into a larger space where several Instagrammable areas are set up.

One of the first interactive spots is an area where visitors can write down their secrets to be delivered to the sea.

I got a picture that simulated me swimming after a siren, which is probably the only way I’d be that deep under the water since my ass can’t swim.

There’s a room where staffers take a Boomerang of visitors in a ball pit with jellyfish projected onto the walls behind them. Seriously, who doesn’t love a ball pit?

One of my favorite photo ops was a giant shell, complete with a big ass pearl in it.  Oh, you know I was all over that.

On your way out there’s an adorable millennial standing by the exit ready to give you a free water bottle with mermaid shells on it…but only if you still have that ticket that you came in with.

I loved that there was a staff member stationed in each area to help you take photos.  I usually have my Insta-hubby with me. But he was super busy with work, so I had to go dolo.  Therefore, I was especially thankful for the extra staff.

I heard there would be a real life mermaid swimming in a tank.  But the mermaid was taking a break while I was there. Not getting a chance to take a photo of her is the only thing about this entire experience that I’m upset about.

I had a lot of fun playing mermaid for the day and I’ll definitely be checking out the show when it premieres on Freeform on March 29th.
