Event Coverage: National Headwrap Day Mixer

I didn’t know there was such a thing as National Headwrap Day, mostly because that’s nearly every damn day for some of us brown girls.  But when Facebook suggested this event, and I saw that it was being held at Runway Boutique, a shop I’d been wanting to visit, I was totally down. I even had the perfect outfit, an Ankara print vintage dress and matching turban, both made by yours truly.

What I liked about the shop was that it had a large open layout, with both vintage and contemporary pieces. There was a great use of color, and art work and home goods were mixed in with the apparel.

The event was great on multiple levels.  The vendors were varied from bath and body products, to Afrocentric dolls, to art work, to waist beads, and of course, headwraps.  My favorite vendor had to by Myra Flynn, a music artist and artisan.  She hammers brass vanity plates made out of pieces salvaged from old pianos. She was making necklaces on the spot and I couldn’t resist picking up a cute little necklace of my own.  Where else could I get a ‘flair’ necklace made from brass found in a 19th century piano? No fucking where else!

There were also fun activities to participate in like the head wrapping tutorial, the bag painting, and the complimentary drinks.  Do NOT judge me for considering drinking a fun activity.

All in all, I had a really good time, met some lovely people, had a delish drink, bought some quality/bomb ass products, and found a new place to shop. (I need more shopping options like I need another hole in my head.)

I’m really glad that I got the chance to talk to Fatima, the owner of the shop before I left.  She was beyond pleasant (a rarity I find with most strangers) and told me about some of the many other events she sponsors.  I know I can’t wait for her next event.
